Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities
Presidential Fellowships
A limited number of highly competitive Presidential Fellowships are available to outstanding students. Candidates are nominated for this award by the department or program to which they apply. The fellowships are valued at between $4,000 and $8,000 and are offered in addition to the normal assistantship stipend, currently $13,000. These awards are normally renewable for a maximum of four years and they carry a full tuition scholarship for this period.

Dean's Scholarships and Fellowships
Dean's Fellowships are similar to Presidential Fellowships: they offer an assistantship (currently $13,000 per year) and a fellowship stipend of $4,000. Dean's Fellows are also awarded a full tuition scholarship for the duration of their award, which for doctoral students is normally renewable for two to four years.
College Fellowships
College Fellowships are similar to Presidential and Dean's Fellowship: they offer a full assistantship (which carries a stipend of $13,000 per year) and a full tuition scholarship during the award period. In addition, College Fellows receive a fellowship stipend of $2,000.
Dissertation Fellowships
Outstanding graduate students who have reached the stage of preparing their doctoral dissertations may apply on a competitive basis to receive a Dissertation Fellowship, which carries with it a stipend of $4,000 for one academic year. There are a limited number of these Fellowships, which entail no teaching or other form of obligation. They are intended to assist advanced doctoral candidates in the preparation of their dissertations. These Fellowships may be used to supplement other forms of financial support a student receives, or they may be awarded to students who are otherwise unfunded.

Arthur A. Schomburg Graduate Fellowship (underrepresented minorities and students who have overcome disadvantages)
These fellowships are available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are members of underrepresented minorities (African-American, Hispanics and Native Americans) or who have overcome social, physical or economic disadvantages and who are entering a graduate degree program for the first time. Departments nominate candidates for these awards (one year, renewable for up to four years) based on standard admissions criteria and are granted only for the degree that the student is pursuing at the time of application. Stipend: $10,000-$15,000, plus tuition scholarship.
DEADLINE for completed graduate application: January 16
Marian E. White Memorial Assistantship
This is a two to four year assistantship award based on standard admissions criteria. One award is open on a competitive basis for those applying to the graduate program in Anthropology for each fall. The best opportunity for funding is to have the application complete and submitted by January 16. The final deadline for completed application is February 1. Stipend: currently $13,000 per year for two to four years, plus tuition scholarship.
